NOTE: Detroit was the nation's fastest growing large city from
1900 to 1930. The city's population probably peaked during World War II and
was just under one million in 1950. In 2000, the city's population was less
than half what it was in 1950. The city's white population peaked in 1950,
while the city's black population peaked in 1990. The foreign-born population
declined from 1930 to 1990, but then increased because of immigration from
Mexico andthe Middle East. Census 1970 was the last to identify the second-generation
population.
